New Moon Therapy EXPANDS TO SECOND VIRGINIA LOCATION, Deepens Focus on LGBTQ+ Family Wellness

Veteran therapist Mary Beth Murray, LCSW, RPT-S, transitions to full-time private practice with a new Downtown office and refined specialty in family-building, gender creative kids, and queer relationships.

[RICHMOND, VA] — June 2026 — New Moon Therapy, the Virginia-based counseling practice founded by Mary Beth Murray, LCSW, RPT-S, is expanding to a second office location and sharpening its focus on therapy for LGBTQ+ families, couples, and gender creative children. The expansion marks Murray's transition to full-time private practice after nearly three decades of clinical work — and reflects a growing demand for affirming, specialized mental health care for queer and trans families across the Commonwealth.

The new Downtown location will serve families Monday through Thursday, while the original Henrico office remains open on Sundays for play therapy with children. Together, the two offices give New Moon Therapy the geographic reach and weekly capacity to serve a community Murray says has been underserved for too long.

"For decades I've watched well-meaning therapists do their best for LGBTQ+ families and still come up short — because the field was built for a different kind of client," said Murray. "I wanted to create a space that doesn't have to be adapted. A space that already understands queer and trans family life, gender creativity, and the joy and complexity of building family on your own terms."

Murray is a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor (RPT-S) credentialed by the Association for Play Therapy, and is licensed by the Virginia Board of Social Work (#0904008178).

Her clinical work spans:

  • Play therapy for gender creative kids and LGBTQ+ youth

  • Family-building support across donor conception, IVF, surrogacy, adoption, foster care, and conception after gender transition

  • Couples therapy for queer and trans relationships using Emotion Focused Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Relational Cultural Therapy

  • Counseling for parents navigating gender transition, coming out, blending, and family change

  • Therapy for adults seeking a more connected, authentic life

  • Clinical supervision for therapists pursuing LCSW licensure and RPT credentialing

Beyond direct clinical work, Murray is actively building a platform for thought leadership in LGBTQ+ family wellness — speaking at conferences, training other clinicians, and developing workshops for helping professionals, allies, and queer families themselves.

"The world needs more kids raised by queer, trans, and non-binary people," Murray said. "And it needs more clinicians who can actually meet those families where they are. Both of those things are part of why I'm doing this."

The expansion comes alongside a full brand refresh and website relaunch, scheduled for early June 2026, with the second office officially opening on August 3.
