About Me

Hi, I‘m
Mary Beth!

I help LGBTQ+ people and their family members build strong relationships and families using creative therapy that works.

A smiling woman with glasses and short gray hair stands indoors, leaning on a black railing with her left hand resting on it and her right hand on her hip, wearing a green shirt with blue floral pattern. The background features a white brick wall, a painting in a gold frame, and a large white lamp with natural light streaming in through a window.

I know firsthand what it’s like to face adversity as a child, a parent and a queer woman.

I have navigated many counseling experiences as a partner, a parent and a person where well-meaning people couldn’t meet my family’s needs.

An elderly woman and a middle-aged woman are cuddling, with the elderly woman kissing the middle-aged woman on the forehead as she closes her eyes happily. The elderly woman is wearing glasses and a gray t-shirt, the middle-aged woman is wearing a white t-shirt with a red heart and black eyes design.

I wanted something different for myself and I want something different for you.

After almost 30 years of practicing, I realized we need a therapy space designed for intentional, forward-thinking and LGBTQ+ families. So, I decided to focus this practice on the wisdom of our communities.  I have done my own work to be able to hold space for yours.  It’s not adapted for you, it IS you.

I have spent the last 28 years building my repertoire of tools with an express focus on relationships, parenting, family and child well-being.

I am well-trained in my niche and give the people I work with the highest standard of care. I know your relationships and family mean everything to you, so I approach our conversations with utmost respect, humility and compassion. People tell me that I have an attentive, fun and nurturing style. I love watching people grow toward authenticity, find their voice and enjoy presence and joy together.

I have earned the distinction of being a Registered Play Therapist - Supervisor by the Association for Play Therapy.

I stay informed by teaching, supervising therapists, volunteering for advocacy organizations, and getting out and having fun with my community. I am licensed under the name Mary Elizabeth P. Murray with the Virginia Board of Social Work, #0904008178.
